First lady in France

A Monday afternoon visit to the Musée de l’Orangerie turned into a media event when U.S. first lady Laura Bush showed up in front of Claude Monet’s painting, Les Nympheas. Mrs. Bush was on a three day visit to Paris. One of the events included a roundtable discussion at UNESCO where she participated with officials from Madagascar, Afghanistan, Egypt and Burkina Faso — and former University of Oregon professor Ed Kame’enui. Ed is commissioner for the National Center for Special Education Research, see next item. He’ll return to the UO in June. Mrs. Bush was surrounded by U.S. and French security…

By Kim Davaz My sister called to tell me that Julia Child had died. I felt I’d lost a friend, knowing her through the familiarity that comes from years of seeing someone in your living room, albeit on television. Child cooked on TV for almost 50 years. And while her body slowly bowed over time, her voice retained its distinctive, enchanting warble, closing each episode with a cheery, “Bon appetit!” From the first time I saw Child on public television’s “The French Chef” - tall, confident, cooking her way through all manner of foods exotic to a girl in elementary school…
