Olivia’s nickname is Osh
Posted by CD • 7:06pm
My granddaughter’s nickname is Osh. It so happens that there’s a city named Osh in Kyrgyzstan. Former Register-Guard Features Editor Grant Podelco and his wife, Daisy Sindelar, are journalists working in Prague, Czech Republic for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and Daisy recently traveled to Kyrgyzstan to produce a series of stories. I asked Grant if he would ask Daisy to shoot a picture of an “Osh” sign to show Olivia. She did and this is how Osh looks in Kyrgyz.

Beatles in Hamburg A few scenes from the beginnings of the Beatles
Posted by CD • 12:28pm
Beatles-Platz at the intersection of the Reeperbahn and Große Freihei in Hamburg features stainless steel sculptures of the Beatles. This one of Paul McCartney frames the scene down Große Freihei, the street where the Beatles performed at a number of clubs. They played their first Hamburg date on Aug. 17, 1960 at the Indra Club. George Harrison was just 17. John Lennon is quoted to have said: "I might have been born in Liverpool - but I grew up in Hamburg." The little Beatlemania Hamburg Museum costs 12 Euros to enter, but it was worth the visit.
